Small-town stoner Mike Howell (Jesse Eisenberg) spends most of his time getting high and writing a graphic novel. What Mike doesn’t know is that he was trained by the CIA to be a lethal killing machine. When the agency targets him for termination, his former handler activates his latent skills, turning the mild-mannered slacker into a deadly weapon. Now, the utterly surprised Mike must use his newfound abilities to save himself and his girlfriend from getting smoked.
I was very in the unknown when I started watching this movie to be honest, I was expecting another Pineapple Express, which I hated, but to be completely honest I ended up really enjoying this movie.
We have these stone head couple living in Virginia and one of them has an inexplicable fear of leaving town. since very early in the movie we are told that the CIA is involved in the movie and that Mark is actually one of them but has been deactivated, and by trying to leave town he has set off some alarms and now they are after him to kill him. Now is all a mess because people are coming left and right trying to end his life and Mark is doing some pretty complicated maneuvers and singlehanded ends it all. So between all the confusion people are not who they have all ways seemed.
These two unlikely characters since the beginning, Mark and Phoebe, whom we start rooting for to have their way amiss all the chaos are extremely charming, Mark and kind of badass Phoebe. I felt that Jesse Eisenberg was great on this film even if I constantly feel he plays the same charming fun and lost characters oven and over while Kirsten stewart? Was my favorite character. They have amazing chemistry that’s for sure and they have this beautiful analogy while having a conversation about their relationship early in the movie ,about standing still and how one is holding the other one back that just puts them back on top for me because let’s face it, I am a die hard romantic so I will find romance in everything I read or see.
American ultra was such a quirky and different concept. I hear people keep comparing it to Bourne and Pineapple express which in a way it is but man, the premise is so misleading. This movie could have been such a good summer blockbuster if they would have market it differently. I was certain this was just one of the typical drugs movie Hollywood keeps on releasing but no. and there lays the bad in this movie. Publicity. poster. trailer.
So if you enjoy fun, action packed and violent movies. you should really consider this one.
Have you guys seen this? enjoy it? how about bad publicity in movies and books?
